Easy Tree Stump Removal

How to Remove a Tree Stump the Easy Way: No Digging Required!

Easy Tree Stump Removal. If you followed Part 1 of the Ultimate Smart Shed series, you know I had already cleared the site. However, after double-checking my measurements for the 12×6 foundation, I realized one final issue remained: a stubborn tree stump right in the corner of the build site.

Instead of spending hours digging and sweating with spade and axe, I decided to let physics do the hard work. In this post, I’ll show you the “Trolley Jack Method” for easy tree stump removal.

The Problem: Stubborn Roots

When you are preparing a site for a concrete foundation, you cannot leave large roots in the ground. Over time, they rot, creating voids that can cause your concrete to crack or sink. This stump was small but the roots were incredibly deep and refused to budge with standard hand tools.

The Solution: The DIY Lever & Jack Method

To rip this stump out without breaking my back, I built a simple vertical pulling rig using tools I already had in the garage:

  1. A Heavy-Duty Chain: Wrapped securely around the base of the stump.
  2. A Car Axle Stand: Used as a pivot point to convert horizontal force into vertical lift.
  3. An Old Wooden Beam: This acted as my lever arm.
  4. A Trolley Jack: The muscle of the operation.

How it Works:

By placing the trolley jack under one end of the wooden beam and anchoring the stump to the other (with the axle stand in the middle), the jack’s hydraulic power creates massive upward pressure. As I pumped the jack, the stump was forced straight up out of the earth—roots and all—with almost zero physical effort.

Why Use a Trolley Jack for Stump Removal?

  • Saves Your Back: No repetitive swinging of a mattock or axe.
  • Precision: It pulls the stump vertically, minimizing the size of the hole you have to fill later.
  • Speed: What usually takes two hours of digging took less than 15 minutes to set up and pull.

What’s Next for the Smart Shed?

With that final obstacle out of the way, the site is officially ready. In the next episode, we finally get to the “grey gold”—we are laying a rock-solid, secure concrete foundation. This is a critical step to ensure the shed doesn’t sink or move over the next 20 years.
