Built By Pete

A Quick Look

I created this blog because sometimes a 10 minute video isn’t enough to capture every command, parts list, table or spec to get the job done. Watch this quick 2-minute video walk through to see how I’ve organised the BuildByPete index and how you can use this companion site to the Youtube Channel to make your next project smoother, faster, and built right the first time.

Solve Your Tech Problems. Build Smarter.

Welcome to Built By Pete, the official companion blog to the YouTube channel where we turn complex tech, smart home automation, networking challenges and general DIY into simple, step-by-step projects. If you’ve ever felt frustrated by overly expensive tools or vague instructions, you’re in the right place. We build, test, and explain the tech solutions you need. This is where your projects get built right.

Who is Pete?

Hi, I’m Pete. I started Built By Pete because I got tired of struggling through confusing tech manuals just to set up a simple network or smart light. My background is in Engineering. I trained as an engineer in the Royal Air Force (RAF). I have an enthusiasm for general DIY, Maker Projects, Tech and Smart Home solutions. I really enjoy problem-solving. My real passion is making sophisticated projects accessible to everyone—from beginners just starting their smart home journey to seasoned makers looking for advanced custom code and reliable network setups.

On this blog, we don’t just show you what to buy; we show you how to build, code, and maintain it yourself. Every tutorial and review is battle-tested in my own workshop and home before it ever hits the web.

Core Focus Areas

  • Smart Home Automation: Practical guides to integrating devices, optimizing voice assistants, and setting up custom automation routines that actually work in the real world.
  • Networking & Connectivity: Demystifying mesh WiFi, VPNs, home servers, and ensuring you have the fastest, most reliable home network possible—often built on a budget.
  • DIY & Maker Projects: Tutorials for custom builds that blur the lines between tech and physical creation.

Community

Since starting the Built By Pete YouTube Channel in 2021, it has grown to over 5,000 subscribers, helping thousands of people each month with DIY and Tech tutorials. The videos have been watched millions of times by enthusiasts all over the world and the community continues to grow. Inspired by the continuing success of the YouTube Channel, I have launched this blog as a home for my detailed step-by-step guides and technical documentation.
